Le conditionnel présent

 

Today, a new and very important French conjugation topic: the present conditional.

How to build conditional present

To form the present conditional, we generally take the infinitive and add –ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient.

Examples :

Finir (to end) = je finirais, tu finirais, il finirait, nous finirions, vous finiriez, ils finiraient

Chanter (to sing) = je chanterais, tu chanterais, il chanterait, nous chanterions, vous chanteriez, ils chanteraient

When the infinitive ends in E, remove the E and add –ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient à l’infinitif.

 Examples :

 Mettre (to put) → mettr → je mettrais, tu mettrais, il mettrait, nous mettrions, vous mettriez, ils mettraient

Prendre (to take) → prendr → je prendrais, tu prendrais, il prendrait, nous prendrions, vous prendriez, ils prendraient

Modal values of the present conditional.

 

a. polite request

 

Examples:

Je voudrais un café, s’il vous plaît. I’d like a coffee, please.

Vous auriez l’heure, s’il vous plaît ? What time is it, please?

Pourriez-vous fermer la porte ? Could you close the door?

 

b. advice & suggestion

 

Examples:

Vous devriez étudier plus. You should study more.

Vous devriez faire plus de sport. You should do more sport.

Toi aussi, tu devrais essayer ! You should try it too!

(The verb should is often used to express advice.)

 

c. The possibility

 

Examples :

 

On dirait bien qu’il n’y aura pas cours aujourd’hui : les portes sont fermées. It looks like there won’t be any classes today: the doors are closed.

Ça pourrait arriver aujourd’hui. It could happen today.

 

d. The imaginary

 

Examples:

 

Imagine : on vivrait sur une île déserte, on serait heureux, on mangerait des fruits et on resterait sur la plage toute la journée. On n’aurait pas besoin de travailler. On pourrait rester là toute notre vie. Ce serait le paradis.

Imagine: we would live on a desert island, we wouldd be happy, we would eat fruit and stay on the beach all day. We wouldn’t have to work. We could stay there all our lives. It would be paradise.

 

e. Unconfirmed information

 

Examples:

 

There would be traffic jams on the A10 freeway. Il y aurait des embouteillages sur l’autoroute A10.

Selon des témoins, un homme armé serait dans la banque. According to witnesses, a gunman is in the bank.

Neuf cent mille réfugiés pourraient arriver cette année en Europe. Nine hundred thousand refugees could arrive in Europe this year.

Le niveau de la Seine devrait dépasser 6m 30 dans la soirée. The Seine is expected to rise above 6m 30 this evening.

 

f. to formulate a hypothesis about the present (especially about something that cannot be achieved)

 

Examples :

 

S’il ne pleuvait pas, je sortirais. (Mais, aujourd’hui, il pleut.) If it wasn’t raining, I’d go out. (But it’s raining today.)

Si j’avais de l’argent, je pourrais partir en vacances. (Mais, je n’ai pas d’argent.) If I had money, I could go on vacation. (But I don’t have any money.)

Si j’étais le Président, alors je baisserais les impôts. (Mais, je ne suis pas le Président.) If I were the President, I’d lower taxes. (But I’m not the President.)

 

g. to express a future probability

 

Examples:

 

Paul viendra demain. Il devrait arriver tôt. (= Il arrivera probablement tôt). Paul is coming tomorrow. He should arrive early (= He probably will).

On commencera à huit heures. On pourrait ainsi finir avant midi sans problème. We’ll start at eight. We could finish before noon without any problem.

 

h. The wish

 

Examples:

 

Ce serait bien que tu te dépêches. It would be nice if you could hurry up.

J’aimerais partir en vacances cet été. I’d like to go on vacation this summer.

Je voudrais bien y aller avec toi. I’d like to go with you.
